The Future of the City: Berlin's Memories
Submitted by Anonymous (not verified) on February 2, 2011 - 12:52am.
This past summer I visited Berlin, a city my parents and brothers left to seek a safer life. The whole time I was there visiting the the neighborhood where my parents lived and worked, tourist sights and museums, I was constantly aware and reminded of the past. Even though the wall is torn down, it is marked by bricks in the ground so that we can remember.
If the city is to re-invent itself, it will be the immigrants who will give it a new character and identity as it blends into the fabric of the German society. My daughter and I sought out a Turkish restaurant and enjoyed the outdoor ambiance one evening among a variety of diners. The Germans need to stop worrying about multiculturalism and just live it by recognizing the value of each individual and their contribution to a society. A society takes time to develop; the greater diversity the better. Stop and think about New York city and the wide variety of immigrants that have come through the city and contributed to making it such a vibrant place to live.
