Somali women and rape

Hi Taylor: Thanks for this wonderful article. I have been writing about the rape Somali face for a long time. All my please usually fell into deaf ears. People don’t want to hear about such a horrendous crime and even Somali women who call themselves activists have asked me to find another hobby instead of talking about rape. They said it is culturally inappropriate. My novel Nomad Diaries centers around a young girl who is raped when the civil war broke in Somalia. Before I wrote the book I wrote a long research article on the same issue. The article was titled: Conspiracy of Silence. The article was mainly about rape being used by Somali men during, before and still as weapon of war. But rape was also very normal for the ruling families in the eighties. There are several famous cases where the sons of the ruling family raped young women with impunity. Once again thanks Yasmeen
