Cuban American visits to Cuba
Submitted by John McAuliff (not verified) on November 18, 2011 - 10:47pm.
More than 20% of the Cuban American population will return to their country of origin this year. Enabling them to do so is an important action by the Obama administration.
Cuban American hardliners like Senator Menendez and Rubio and their counterparts in the House are fearful of the political consequences within their community and trying to reverse this policy legislatively.
It is unfortunate that the President was not as far sighted when it came to travel for the rest of us.
He has taken a useful half step for purposeful travel but it is bogged down in bureaucratic procedure. As a result fewer people are going, at a higher cost than necessary and only in group tours.
A few hundred jobs have been created in the travel industry instead of thousands.
Another lost opportunity.
