Unleashing Potential: A Political Salon with Elmira Bayrasli

Tuesday, March 6, 2012 - 6:30pm

The SUNY Levin Institute and World Policy Institute present:

Unleashing Potential: Addressing Challenges to Global Entrepreneurship
A Political Salon with Elmira Bayrasli

Tuesday, March 6 at 6:30 pm.
This event is by invitation only.

Ever since Bangladeshi economist Muhammad Yunus showed that people can lift themselves out of poverty by building businesses through small loans, many people have embraced entrepreneurship as the path to economic development. More recently, the rapid ascent of countries Brazil, India, China, South Africa and Turkey on the tails of promising, high-growth start-ups has reinforced the notion that financial stability depends on entrepreneurship. Yet recent turmoil in the microfinance industry has called into question the role of entrepreneurship. Elmira Bayrasli has observed first-hand the enormous potential of entrepreneurship to fight poverty and spark economic growth. She also has seen the obstacles to its potential that go far beyond the lack of access to capital. In this Political Salon, Bayrasli discusses the challenges standing in the way of entrepreneurs in both the developing and developed world, and offers ideas on how to overcome them.

About the Speaker

Elmira Bayrasli writes about global innovations and entrepreneurship on Entreventures on Forbes.com. Over the past several years, Elmira has worked to support start-ups in emerging markets at Endeavor, served as the Chief Spokesperson for the OSCE Mission to Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo and assisted former Secretary of State Madeleine K. Albright. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, an advisory board member for the Turkish Women’s International Network and Turkish Philanthropy Funds and a mentor for the Women Innovate Mobile entrepreneur incubator. She is a regular speaker on innovation and start-ups and is currently writing a book on the obstacles to global entrepreneurship.

About the Sponsors

The SUNY Levin Institute is an incubator for programs that support New York’s economic and social vitality through innovative and competitive responses to the challenges of today’s global economy. Through a combination of research, public engagement, and education programs we deepen knowledge and take action to help revitalize New York’s economy. Two of our programs, FastTrac and JumpStart NYC, are focused on enabling New York City’s aspiring entrepreneurs and professionals in transition to compete in the global economy.

The World Policy Institute, a non-partisan global think tank, engages fresh ideas and new voices from around the world to address critical shared challenges. WPI's Fellows program, regular public and private events, policy development, media activities, and flagship World Policy Journal provide a forum for solution-focused policy analysis and debate. It seeks and promotes policy solutions in support of an inclusive and sustainable global market economy, effective global governance, and broadened security strategies.

The Political Salon, organized by Steve Sokol since 2003 to promote dialogue among the next generation of leaders in business, policy, and the media, regularly convenes a group of young professionals to discuss a range of foreign policy issues and global affairs. Attendees are diverse in terms of nationality, profession, and political persuasion.

With special thanks to the Heinrich Böll Foundation for supporting the Political Salon.
