In 2005, World Policy Journal was the first publication to print a shocking set of photographs that brought the ethnic cleansing in Darfur to the attention of the world. The photo essay helped to launch former Marine Captain Brian Steidle's quest to convince global leaders to condemn the acts as genocide, to intervene on behalf of the victims, and to help the survivors.  Steidle’s story became a book, The Devil Came on Horseback: Bearing Witness to the Genocide in Darfur, and now a documentary film.
